Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has made new suggestions about patroling women’s toilets over concerns of transgender folks.

The writer, well-known for her controversial views on trans rights, made the shocking statement on Twitter after being questioned on how she “plans to police public toilets."

The question was asked after several public restrooms have updated their policies so that single-sex bathrooms can be used only by those of the “biological” sex, following the Supreme Court’s gender ruling in April and subsequent interim guidance issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

“Quite easily, really,” Rowling replied bluntly. “Decent men will stay out, as they always have, so we can assume all who don’t are a threat, given their disregard for women’s and girls’ safety, privacy and dignity. Photographing, reporting and disseminating such men’s images online will be a piece of cake.”

Responding to her answer, columnist Darryl Mott said: “In case you can’t tell what just happened, JK Rowling instructed her followers to take photos of anyone in a women’s restroom who doesn’t match their idea of Western feminine beauty standards. Short hair? Thick cheekbones/jaw? Too tall or broad-shouldered? You’re now ‘a man’ and will be harassed.”

Her comment gains several more responses on the platform, with one saying: “JK Rowling now openly incites public harassment of trans women and others who don’t meet her personal test of ‘decency’. Photographing strangers and posting their image online as presumed threats? That’s not feminism. It’s a vigilante call to action, rooted in paranoia.”

Another chimed in: “You want to take pictures of people using the restroom? Do you not realize how sick and f---ed up that sounds?”

“Joanne [the author’s first name], what you are encouraging people to do is illegal. Photographing people going about their day then sharing the images without their consent is a flagrant violation of their right to privacy," a third posted.

Another sarcastically wrote: "Thank you for attempting to explain. Correct me if I am wrong, but is your idea to encourage women to take photos of anyone they think "looks like a man" and spread those photos on the internet accusing the person in the photo of being a pervert?"

"If disregard for dignity and privacy makes someone a threat, are you a threat as you have no regard for the dignity and privacy of others in a public restroom? The hypocrisy of directing open harassment, photos of others in a bathroom while demanding privacy is astounding," a fifth disappointed user asked.

One pointed out: "Sounds like a lot of cis women who don't fit the traditional "feminine" aesthetic will be photographed and have their privacy violated. But you're protecting women, right?"

This comes as HBO is set to release a new Harry Potter show. The network has already clarified they do not stand behind Rowling and her views.
