Black Sabbath fans have been left stunned upon learning the origin of the band's name, 57 years after they formed.

The British rock group, comprised of guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler and singer Ozzy Osbourne, initially went by the moniker Earth Blues Company. They later shortened it to Earth, but had to abandon that name due to another band already using it.

The band eventually settled on Black Sabbath, inspired by a 1963 horror flick starring Frankenstein's Boris Karloff. This title was then attached to a chilling new song, inspired by a vision Butler had experienced, and it ultimately became the name they would be recognized by throughout their musical journey.

One fan shared on Reddit, "Geezer Butler had a dream that reminded the band about the movie 'Black Sabbath'. That was the inspiration for the name, and the song."

Another chimed in, "Boris Karloff is the king of horror imo. Dude is an absolute classic. Everyone loves Bedlam but my favorite is The Haunted Strangler."

A user claimed, "They actually stole their songs from a band called Jazz Sabbath and to really rub salt in the wound they stole part of the name as well."

Yet another fan noted that their original name - Earth - led to them being mistakenly booked for a gig intended for the other band, reports the Mirror US.

They quoted from Osbourne's autobiography, "In Ozzy's autobiography, he mentions another reason for the name change was because they discovered another band named Earth after someone mistakenly booked them for a show."

The other act called Earth was established in 1989 and continues to produce drone rock music.

Fans have expressed that Black Sabbath is an excellent choice for a band name, with one fan commenting on Reddit, "I definitely agree that Black Sabbath is one of the best. I'd add Metallica to the list here too."

Another enthusiast remarked, "It's just so perfect for the band along with being completely bada-s and also not generic in the slightest. I know they basically just yoinked it from the movie but it really is an incredibly smart name which just sounds menacing and really plays on the mood of the doomy music they play."

Black Sabbath bid farewell at their final performance in Birmingham, England, on July 5. Their last concert, known as Back to the Beginning, was part of an all-day metal fest featuring a lineup of heavyweights like Metallica, Slayer, Gojira, and a supergroup featuring Steven Tyler and Ronnie Wood.

While video tributes from legendary bands like Metallica and Slayer were well-received, Marilyn Manson's on-screen appearance didn't sit well with some attendees at the live show or those tuning in via an online stream.

The 56-year-old Manson appeared through a pre-recorded video message, expressing his admiration for Osbourne. "It is a great honor to be here via this video, and I'd like to say congratulations, and I love you very much Ozzy," he said.

However, his appearance was met with disapproval by online viewers, outraged by the multiple sexual abuse allegations leveled against him since 2021 - allegations that he has consistently and strongly denied. Social media users were quick to criticize his involvement in the event.

One person vented on X, "Disgraceful that he is on this otherwise outstanding Black Sabbath show," Another added, "Eurgh Marilyn Manson making an appearance on the sabbath stream," and "F--- that guy he's a piece of s---."
