A contemporary Western has been celebrated as "simply perfect", with viewers applauding its "excellent" acting and "hilarious dialogue". The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) stands as an anthology Western, comprised of six tales showcasing strikingly different themes and personas - and fans can watch it on Netflix.

Helmed by the Coen brothers, renowned for masterpieces like The Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men, the movie presents a diverse array of characters that capture various aspects of the harsh truths of the American Frontier. O Brother, Where Art Thou? star Tim Blake Nelson portrays the cheerful, crooning cowboy Buster in the title role.

Several other notable performers grace the screen, including Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, James Franco, and gruff-voiced musical icon Tom Waits.

One Audience Reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes penned: "A singing outlaw, an unlucky robber and an aging prospector are some of the stories in this American anthology of violence, danger and excitement.

"With a stellar cast portraying each of their characters with gusto, this is unlike any other western movie you've ever heard of."

Another dubbed it an "uncompromising collection of stories of hardship, loss, and betrayal in the old west", calling the production: "Simply perfect."

A third declared the picture "has it all", "Dark humor, pathos and hope".

"Well acted and incredibly written each story will hold your attention throughout the entire film," they added.

One other said: "I didn't know what to make of the opening, but Buster Scruggs sucked me in with his wit and hilarious dialogue. The next episodes are more sombre and just as intriguing. Well worth watching."

Another viewer commented: "I avoided watching this movie for years, because the trailer looked so bad. I broke down and watched it recently, and it was excellent. The photography was wonderful, the stories offbeat and humorous at times, and the acting was excellent all around."

The production holds "Certified Fresh" status on Rotten Tomatoes, achieving an 89% rating on the platform's Tomatometer, which indicates the proportion of approved critics who awarded the film favourable reviews.

According to the British Board of Film Classification, the picture carries a 15 certificate and features intense bloody violence, meaning it might not suit all audiences.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
