Houseflies will stay out of homes if you do 10-second task once a day
Flies can be a real nuisance in the summer months, but I have been able to keep them at bay by doing a simple 10-second task every day.
Flies can become a nuisance during the summer, quickly infesting your home. I've found that there's a simple yet highly effective method to permanently deter them.
This summer, I've had to deal with numerous flies, forcing me to keep my windows closed at night, but these pesky insects still somehow find their way into my kitchen.
While it may seem obvious to maintain cleanliness in your fruit bowl and trash bin since flies are attracted to food, I didn't realize that my sink was actually the main area of concern. Sink drains provide an ideal environment for flies, being warm, moist, and occasionally containing food scraps.
They're also hidden from view, making it easy for an infestation to go unnoticed. If these concealed flies aren't detected, they can rapidly escalate into a larger issue. They'll start laying eggs, which makes eliminating them significantly more challenging.
I'm grateful that I discovered my own fly infestation within the first day, and I found that a very simple way to prevent them from invading my kitchen was to take a few moments to pour boiling water down the drain.
Boiling water not only kills any flies or larvae hiding in your drain, but it also helps dislodge any grease adhering to your pipes that attracts these pests. Flies have an incredibly acute sense of smell and are drawn to the scent of decaying food, but keeping drains clean will eliminate these odors and prevent flies from entering your home.
I truly detest using insect sprays in my home. I don't want to inhale toxic fumes, and I'm concerned about the health risks of these chemicals lingering on my floors and countertops.
However, since I've started spending 10 seconds each morning cleaning my drain, I haven't had to deal with any flies, and I can now leave my windows open without fear of these pesky insects.
How to eliminate flies and prevent them from entering your home.
Occasionally, I pour soda crystals down the drain before pouring water down it, as this naturally breaks down grease and is one of the best ingredients for preventing clogs.
I once poured boiling water down the drain at night before going to bed, just to ensure I had eradicated any flies that might be sneaking into my kitchen.
Then, I made sure there was no grease, food scraps, or anything else in my sink overnight to ensure there was nothing to attract the flies.
I've also been setting a simple apple vinegar trap next to my fruit bowl and on my windowsill, which has been very effective at keeping flies at bay.
For me, it seems best to use the apple vinegar trap when my window is open, and then pour boiling water down the drain each day when my windows are closed.
However, flies often invade kitchens because they're attracted to the smell of food, so I've also been temporarily storing all my fruit in the fridge and making sure to change out the trash bag daily.
July is peak season for flies, but I'm pleased to share that since implementing the boiling water technique, vinegar trap, and keeping my food hidden, my home has been insect-free.
It's been approximately 10 days since I last saw a fly buzzing around my kitchen.
Now, I can relish the summer breeze through open windows without the nuisance of bothersome flies.
