With summer in full swing, many folks are planning to enjoy their backyards. But we're rarely alone in our outdoor spaces, and wasps often turn out to be uninvited guests.

Online searches for "how to deter wasps from garden" have skyrocketed by over 5,000% in the past month, showing that homeowners are looking for solutions.

Fortunately, gardening guru James Higgins from Grass247 has shared a natural and surprisingly powerful way to keep wasps at bay without resorting to harsh chemicals or traps. Despite wasps' reputation for aggressive stinging, Higgins notes they usually only attack if they feel threatened.

"Try to stay calm and avoid swatting at them," he suggested.

"Wasps also serve as pollinators and play a vital role in the ecosystem, so it's better to use natural methods to discourage them rather than wipe them out."

One such method is a DIY wasp spray that combines just three everyday ingredients: water, dish soap, and essential oils.

"In a spray bottle, simply mix water with a few tablespoons of dish soap and add a few drops of essential oil," Higgins detailed.

"Peppermint, lavender, and clove oil are particularly effective, as wasps find their strong scents overwhelming and unpleasant."

Once mixed, the solution can be gently sprayed around your garden, particularly in areas where wasps tend to gather or build nests, such as under eaves, near outdoor seating areas, or around trash cans.

The mixture acts more as a mild deterrent than an exterminator, encouraging the insects to move without harming them. This spray also doubles as a deterrent for ants and some types of flies, making it a fantastic all-purpose garden ally.

While it may not completely eliminate wasps, this natural method helps in keeping your garden a more peaceful place during the summer months.

And with temperatures soaring above 86°F in various cities this weekend, there's never been a better time to try this eco-friendly spray.
